Hmm... Not the start I hoped for, but better than my trip to the races a few weeks back.
From the 8 races, in which I placed a £1 bet to win... I only won one race, and that had the lowest odds at 8 - 11... so just got £1.73 back.
I'm £6.27 down already! Let's hope next week is better :)

The First Weekend
A few Saturdays back I left London to the races at Newbury. It is a yearly event, not on the racing calendat, but where I get a chance to meet my friends from Devon, and Wiltshire (I think!) half way.
This year we met at Reading station and travelled to the course together. Spencer has Templegates tips from The Sun, I had the Guardian racing pages, and my other friend George, was just going to stick to putting his money on the second favourite, a little like always buying the second least expensive wine in a restaurant as everyone does
We all stuck to our plan, and bet the same on each race, Spencer - £5, myself a tenner, and george £20.
I was the least successful... and didn't win a race! Spencer had one win and sort of levelled out at the end... meanwhile George has three wins from the eight races.
It got me thinking, that the tipster I was using is payed to give advice, and in my case it didn't really help, although I understand that is the whole point of gambling...
So I'm going to do a little test, which should cost me less than a tenner a week, and could very likely, though I must point out I'm doing this as a theory and not a money earner. The Plan - Every Saturday I shall put £1 on each of the tips from Templegate in the Sun. Why have I switched my allegience from The Guardian? Simply because I like his layout in that he picks out from various races around the country, so if a race meet is cancelled I can still have bets on the other races available. Also he gives less than ten tips in his paragraph, and I don't want to bet on every race, which he also offers a tip for.
So, this is the first weekend and I've joined up with paddypower.com put £20 in to keep me going, if things went to plan I might never need to top that up... but we'll see!
In The Sun, Templegate gave 8 tips... so I've put a £1 on each of them as follows...
2.05 YORK I got odds of 14-1 on CONNECT so a possible return of £15
2.20 GOODWOOD FLIPANDO gives me a possible return of £8, with odd of 7-1
2.35 YORK THOUSAND WORDS can give me a return of just £2.88, as its odds are only 15-8
2.50 GOODWOOD GWEEBARRA offer a return of 5 quid, from 4-1 odds
3.10 YORK IFFRAAJ, where do they get these names? This horse must be a favourite as it will only give me a return of £1.72 as the odds are 8-11
3.45 YORK RED ROCKS apparently can crush his St Leger rivals, and hopefully I'll get a £5 return as it was 4-1 when I placed my bet.
3.55 LEOPARDSTOWN ALEXANDER GOLDRUN 3-1 odds on this so a return of £4, but Templegate seems quite enthusiastic about it.
4.10 CHESTER -MOONE CROSS Odds of 7-1 will give me a return of £8
